Fun Fact of the Day: The oldest rocks in the Grand Canyon are almost 2 billion years old!

Hello Fifth Grade Families! As we continue with our remote learning, all STEM work will be posted on the Google Classroom and on the blog. Math and Science work will be assigned and due Mondays and Wednesdays each week. Please make sure you are checking your Google Classroom to keep up with the work!

Parents and Guardians, if you would like access to see what work your student has coming up/missing/turned in, please contact a fifth grade teacher and we will invite you to the Google Classroom.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, just to say hi, or even a funny joke!

Day 1 Video:

Week of 3/2: This week students will be taking their unit 4 assessment on adding and subtracting decimals, as well as plotting points on coordinate grids. We will be starting out next unit on fractions later this week! In science we will be exploring Earth and its movement around the sun and what we can see from Earth.

Tuesday's Homework: None (Test)

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 5.1

Week of 1/27: This week students will be continuing their work with decimals! They will be ordering and comparing, as well as rounding decimals. In science we are wrapping up our science unit with the Montshire and students will be designing their own labs! I am very excited to see what the students want to explore and investigate!

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 4.2

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 4.4

Week of 1/5: This week students will be reviewing addition and subtraction of fractions and practice their learning with number stories. They will also be taught how to multiply fractions! Very exciting times in math class! It is quite funny how many students will be shocked that multiplying fractions is easier than adding and subtracting them! In science we will continue to work on our Montshire lab, focusing on heat conduction and convection and prepare to start planning out our own labs.

This Friday there will be a mid-year Computational Fluency test (1/10), and the Unit 3 Assessment the following Wednesday (1/15).

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 3.12

Thursday's Homework: Computational Fluency Review

Week of 12/2: This week students will focus on fraction number stories to interpret remainders. Students have practiced interpreting remainders with division and when to ignore the remainders and when to round the quotient up depending on the situation. In science the class will be working on making our own thermometers and discussing our labs that we have done recently in a "science meeting".

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 3.3

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 3.4

Week of 11/25: This week students will focus on fraction number stories, and using fraction circle pieces to assist. In science students will be creating graphs based on their data they obtained from the energy lab last week. Homework for this week will be multiplication review, and Mrs. Martino will introduce students to Google Sketch-Up on Wednesday!

Thursday's Homework: None, Thanksgiving Break

Week of 11/18: The beginning of this week will be focused on reviewing for our Unit 2 Assessment that we will be taking on Tuesday. The remainder of the week will focus on connecting fractions to division and interpreting remainders in division problems. In science we will finish the lab that we started with the Montshire and will continue to explore energy!
The Unit 2 Test includes:
-writing numbers in expanded form
-writing numbers in standard notation, products of 10s, and exponential notation
-converting values
-writing numbers based on place values
-creating mathematical models
-using the US traditional algorithm to solve multiplication problems
-using partial quotients to solve division problems

Tuesday's Homework: None, taking the Unit 2 Test

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 3.1

Week of 11/11: This week in math we will be focusing on division and understanding partial quotients. We will be discussing remainders, and when it is important to ignore the remainders, and when it is important to round the quotient up because of them. In science we will be having a "Science Meeting" on Wednesday in class to go over lab work that they have done to wrap up the labs before the Montshire comes to visit us and do a lab on Thursday.

Tuesday's Homework: Review Sheet

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 2.11

Week of 11/4: This week we will be wrapping up our Mystery Science lab about acids and if it is safe to drink various acids. We will be continuing our reading on particles and talk about real-life examples of particles in our lives. In math we will be working on reviewing the partial quotients strategy that your children learned in fourth grade.

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 2.9

Thursday's Homework: None (No School on Friday)

Week of 10/21: This week we are going to continue practicing the US Traditional Algorithm for multiplication, getting ourselves prepared to multiply by 3-digit numbers. We will soon be learning the traditional way to divide as well!
Ms. Moran will be out of school on Thursday, and Mr. Lindemann will be coming in to do a science activity with the class!
For the rest of the week, in science we will be finishing up last week's Mystery Science activity and prepare ourselves for the third lab! We are focusing on particles and states of matter.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

Best,
Ms. Moran

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 2.8

Thursday's Homework: None! Have a safe night!

Week of 10/21: This week we are going to continue learning about US Traditional Algorithm for multiplication. Last week we focused on multiplying two and three-digit numbers by one digit numbers, and this week we will work on multiplying by two-digit numbers. This is a very new topic to many students, and I encourage them to continue practicing and asking questions! An extra emphasis of using estimation to check the reasonableness of our solutions will be happening all week in class! Tomorrow's main focus is conversions in various measurements.
In science we will be starting a new Mystery Science lab! We are currently focusing on chemical reactions and properties of matter.

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 2.7 (read the directions carefully)

Thursday's Homework: None

Week of 10/14: This week we will be practicing making estimations to determine if our solutions make sense. We will be learning about the US Traditional Algorithm for multiplication (the way most adults know how to multiply), and check for reasonableness of our solutions with estimation. Because of the short week last week, we will be continuing our Mystery Science lab from last week about chemical reactions with pennies!
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, email is best, and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Tuesday's Homework: Homelink 2.3

Thursday's Homework: Homelink 2.4

Week of 10/7: This week in class we are going to start our new math unit! This unit focuses on our place value system, and soon we will be talking about the US Traditional Algorithm for multiplication! Please keep me updated if you have any questions about what we are learning in the classroom! In science we are going to be exploring properties of matter and doing a Mystery Science lab. This week we will be taking old pennies (1982 and older) and experimenting with different solutions to see what happens to the pennies when they are dipped in. We will be doing this lab throughout the week, so be sure to check in with your child to see what they think is going to happen to their pennies and why!

Tuesday: Homework: All School Hike-no homework

Thursday's Homework: Home Link 2.2
